Governments and big business strengthen protection from mutating cyber crime

Towards the end of December Microsoft announced that it had discovered a major cyber attack, which had infected 40 government organizations, non-profit organizations, government contractors and IT companies (80% in the USA). Whether state-sponsored, or by individual criminals hacking is exploiting the world’s reliance on digital technology, which has increased significantly during the pandemic. Last year saw attempts to exploit the massive movements of workers from office to homes. In future the rise of quantum computing will allow most of the current encryption in place to be hacked to add to the challenge.
My seventh prediction is that many organizations will detect that their computing has been compromised when they thought they were safe and that there will be much more spending by governments and big businesses to create more security for their operations and customers. While no single approach will emerge to guarantee safety, many will merge their approaches to physical and cyber security – with successful strategies based on a holistic approach encompassing internal and external staff and spending on hardware, software and services.
